Toddler Birthday Parties
Hi Jeanette,
My question relates to the toddler/young children age group..
I’d love some guidance on how to approach children’s birthday parties/social gatherings where there is a lot of less nutritious foods on offer (such as cake/chocolates/chips etc.)
These are not typical foods in our house, so our 3 year old is generally not exposed to them outside of social gatherings.
For the handful of birthday parties we have been to this year, we have let her eat what she wants and taken the view that A)it is not an every day occurrence, and B)we know that a broad overview of her food intake across
the week is fairly balanced.
At a birthday party she, understandably, gravitates to eating what the other kids are eating and generally skips sandwiches in preference to chips, cakes, fairy bread etc
But, is there a point at a party/social gathering that we should/could step in and suggest only one more of X food (eg chocolates), you could eat some Y food next (eg fruit)?
Or does doing that start opening a door to potential thoughts of “good” and “bad” foods? We also don’t want her to feel like we’re restricting foods or that she’s being told off for eating certain foods.
Thank you for all you do in the Solids space!
Terese
